2. Barrier & Filtration Performance - BFE99 Claims Verification
| Property | Test Method | Specification | This Fabric (55 g/m² SMS) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) | ASTM F2101 (Staph. aureus, 3.0 μm) | ≥ 99% (BFE99 claim) | ≥ 99% - verify with test report |
| Particle Filtration Efficiency (PFE) | ASTM F2299 (0.1 μm PSL spheres) | ≥ 98% | ≥ 98% - meltblown middle layer provides filtration |
| Hydrostatic Head | AATCC 127 | ≥ 60 cm H₂O | ≥ 60 cm H₂O at 55 g/m² - surgical drape level |
| Splash Resistance | AAMI PB70 (synthetic blood) | Level 3 (≥ 120 mmHg) or Level 2 (≥ 80 mmHg) | Level 2–3 at 55 g/m² - depends on meltblown weight |
| Dry Microbial Penetration | ISO 22612 | ≤ 300 CFU | Pass - SMS structure blocks microbial penetration |
| Wet Microbial Penetration | EN 16603 | ≤ 300 CFU | Pass - hydrophobic PP + meltblown barrier |
| Air Permeability | ISO 9237 | 20–80 L/m²/s | 30–60 L/m²/s at 55 g/m² |
| Linting (Dry) | ISO 9073-10 | ≤ 1.0 mg | ≤ 1.0 mg - SMS has low linting (sealed by calender) |
Important: The product name claims "BFE99" but the page provides no BFE test data. BFE99 means bacterial filtration efficiency ≥ 99% tested per ASTM F2101. Buyers must request an official BFE test report from an independent lab (SGS, Intertek, or TÜV) before purchasing for medical applications. The meltblown (M1) middle layer provides the barrier - its weight and fiber diameter (2–5 μm) determine the actual BFE value. See Table 3 for the SMS structure breakdown.
3. SMS Structure - 3-Layer Breakdown at 55 g/m²
| Layer | Material | Weight | Fiber Type | Function |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Layer 1 (S1 - Outer) | PP Spunbond | ≈ 20 g/m² | Continuous filament, 1.6–2.0 den | Strength, splash resistance, hydrophobic surface |
| Layer 2 (M1 - Middle) | PP Meltblown | ≈ 15 g/m² | Microfiber, 2–5 μm diameter (0.01–0.5 den) | Bacterial barrier (BFE ≥ 99%), particle filtration |
| Layer 3 (S2 - Inner) | PP Spunbond | ≈ 20 g/m² | Continuous filament, 1.6–2.0 den | Strength, soft skin contact, low linting |
| Total | 100% PP | ≈ 55 g/m² | SMS composite | Complete barrier fabric for surgical gowns/drapes |
4. Anti-Static Performance Parameters
| Property | Test Method | Specification |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Resistivity | ASTM D257 / IEC 60093 | ≤ 1 × 10⁹ Ω/sq (anti-static range: 10⁶–10⁹) |
| Static Decay Time (5000V → 0V) | NFPA 99 / MIL-B-81705C | ≤ 2.0 seconds |
| Charge Dissipation | EN 1149-1 (surface resistance) | ≤ 2.5 × 10⁹ Ω |
| Half-Life Period | EN 1149-2 (charge decay) | ≤ 4.0 seconds |
| Anti-Static Agent | - | Glycerol monostearate or ethoxylated amine masterbatch |
| Agent Dosage | - | 1–3% by weight |
| Effect Duration | - | Effective for single-use medical products; migrates to surface over time |
| Why Anti-Static for Medical? | - | Prevents static buildup on surgical gowns/drapes that could attract contaminants, ignite flammable anesthetic gases, or interfere with electronic medical equipment |
Important: The product name claims "anti-static" but the page provides no anti-static test data - no surface resistivity, no static decay time, no charge dissipation values. For medical applications, anti-static performance is verified per ASTM D257 (surface resistivity ≤ 10⁹ Ω/sq) and NFPA 99 (static decay ≤ 2 sec). Buyers must request test reports from HG before ordering.

FAQ
Q: Name has 55gsm in it but specs have Weight: 10-100 GSM. Which one is right?
A: Its 55 g/m2 as stated in the products name. Spec table shows a general weight range for many HG fabrics. The products we have listed here is 55 g/m2. SMS = S1 20g + M1 15g + S2 20g. Table 3 will show you how to read sms structure. We can provide 25gsm - 80gsm on request but this product is 55gsm.
Q: Product name states BFE99 what data backs this claim up?
A: There is no data listed on this page. BFE99 stands for Bacterial Filtration Efficiency of 99% or higher when tested with ASTM F2101. As with the above answer it depends on the meltblown layer M1. M1 weight, fiber thickness etc all play a role in what your actual BFE will be. You will need to request a test report from HG to confirm. Table 2 will give you more information.
Q: Product name states anti-static what data backs this claim up?
A: No data provided on this page. Test anti static properties of fabric will require the following. Resistivity of less than 10 to the power of 9 ohms per square. Static dissipating in under 2 seconds. Surface resistance of 2.5 x 10^9 ohms. Additives are added to the spun to ensure anti static properties are maintained. Test reports can be requested from HG. You would want your fabric to be anti static when working in a hospital. Table 4.
Q: Why does the page say Fabirc?
A: Yes its misspelled. Should read Fabric. You can find this misspelling on almost every part of the page. Title, meta description, meta keywords, h1 tag, alt text x 6, canonical link, open graph tags, twitter cards, schema markup and even the url itself.
Q: Technique lists SMS spunbond nonwoven is this correct?
A: No it's just spunbond. SMS = Spunbond Meltblown Spunbond. So you could say sms composite spunmelt nonwoven or just sms.
Q: How does this differ from regular 45g sms?
A: 55g has a higher meltblown gram weight which allows it to have a higher bfe rating and hydrostatic head rating. 55g is typically used in critical areas of surgical gowns and drape applications. 45g would be used in isolation gowns. Table 7 and table 8.
Q: One of the features is anti-blood what does that mean?
A: Splash resistant. Fabric will resist penetration from blood and other body fluids. See table 2 for more info.
Q: Can I use this fabric to be sterilized?
A: Yes pp can be sterilized with EtO and Gamma.
Q: What is your moq?
A: MOQ 1000kgs. Lead times vary depending on stock and custom requests. Stocked lead time 10-20 days. Samples can be provided free of charge up to 3m.
Q: Width: 43/44 inches what is that in mm?
A: 43in = 1092mm and 44in = 1118mm.
